The Heart Behind Max

Have you ever watched a child light up simply because someone included them, encouraged them, or chose to be kind?

That moment is the heart behind Max.

Max the Blue Jay began in 2014 as a heartfelt school project between my son and me. What started as a simple story quickly became something much bigger. Together, we imagined a character who could help children feel seen, heard, encouraged, and brave enough to choose kindness, even on the hard days.

After seeing how deeply Max’s story connected with children, we self-published Max the Blue Jay is Not Having a Good Day in 2015. That first book lit a fire in me to create stories and experiences that could uplift children, support families, and remind young readers that kindness has power.

BTFOK, which stands for Be The Face Of Kindness, grew from that same purpose. Through storytelling, interactive school experiences, and our signature program, 5 Ways to BTFOK, children learn how to choose kindness, help others, use kind words, show love, and spread kindness in their everyday lives.

Max was never just a book character. He became a symbol of kindness, courage, inclusion, and compassion.

What began as a dream between a mother and son continues as a movement for children everywhere.

We are not just teaching children about kindness. We are helping them become the face of it.
